Teacher training on the Marine enviroment and fishing in Coastal communities of northwestern Mexico
In 2015, using The Marine Environment and Fishing guide, we trained 273 teachers and 1,835 students, representing 53% of teachers and 28% of students in elementary schools neighboring the priority sites of the Upper Gulf of California, in the communities of El Vizcaino, Bahia Magdalena, Cabo del Este, Punta San Cosme, Punta Coyote, and Marismas Nacionales located in the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, and Nayarit.
Of these teachers, 18 completed the environmental education course, Environmental Education Teaching Tools for Protection of Priority Conservation Areas, provided by Pronatura Noroeste in coordination with the uabc Faculty of Science. This program spans 190 hours and is divided into the following modules: For an Ocean Free of Plastic, The Brant, Wetlands of Northwestern Mexico, Environmental Goods and Services, and The Marine Environment and Fishing. These courses were also of great use for some members of the community who are a fundamental part of the care and conservation of natural resources.
