Education for conservation in the Sierra Tarahumara
Education for the conservation of the Sierra Tarahumara Knowing about conservation is essential for the harmonious development of society with nature. Education is one way to involve the community to achieve this aim.
Given the above, the Conservation Education Program has carried out training and outreach activities with community promotors and with basic and higher education groups in the state of Chihuahua.
Thanks to the work of the community promoters, the residents of the municipality of Urique, deep in the Sierra Madre Occidental, participate in conservation actions for the Lilaccrowned Amazon, a species of parrot considered threatened by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and in danger of extinction in Mexico, according to NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010.
In response to community interest, the mayor of Urique adopted the Lilac-Crowned Amazon as the representative species of the municipality. The training of community promoters in conservation and environmental education activities has a positive impact, as it strengthens the ties between the community and its environment, and raises awareness about the need to protect it.
