Conservation of shorebirds
For over 20 years, Pronatura Noroeste, together with Universidad Autonoma de Baja California Sur, has implemented conservation actions for shorebirds that live year-round or overwinter in northwestern Mexico. This program covers all priority wetlands used as habitat by shorebirds, and involves conservation research, protection of critical areas, population monitoring, habitat restoration, mitigation of impacts, and environmental education in schools and the community.
One of the most important projects for the program relates to beaches protection in the Gulf of Santa Clara, Sonora, where approximately 3,000 of Red Knots congregate as same time as Gulf grunion spawn phenomenon, which birds use to feed on.
