The ecological and sociocultural connection of the Colorado River basin, from its source in the Rocky Mountains to its mouth in the Sea of Cortez, is indisputable. This is why a memorandum of understanding was signed to establish the Asociación Hermanas del Río (Sisters of the River Association) between the cities of Denver, Colorado, USA, and San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, Mexico.

The signing of this agreement underscores the importance of the protection and restoration of the Colorado River for economic development, quality of life improvement, and promotion of culture and art in the different populations along the basin.

The association was formed to strengthen and formalize the existing bilateral goodwill relationship, create a leadership exchange, and develop cultural, artistic, and environmental projects to promote and celebrate the hydrological, economic, and social interdependencies of users on both sides of the border.

Pronatura Noroeste participated in the preparation of seven projects, including the Ecological Festival of the Americas, a market study about the construction of an amphitheater, the creation of the Linear Park, and, in collaboration with Denver Botanic Gardens, the development of a strategic plan for the Botanical Garden of the Desert of San Luis Rio Colorado.

The mayors of San Luis Rio Colorado and Denver highlighted the importance of working together and sharing in the respect and protection of the Colorado River to create bridges instead of walls.
