Barred sandbass fishery management in the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur
The Barred Sand Bass is a fish from the grouper and sea bass family, abundant on the Pacific coast of Baja California. On average, 4,300 tons of Barred Sand Bass are captured each year, which represents 8% of the fishing production in Baja California Sur. In some communities, Barred Sand Bass accounts for more than 70% of the total catch volume, benefiting around 30,000 people.
Pronatura Noroeste has collaborated with the National Fisheries Institute to identify alternatives that improve environmental, economic and social aspects of this fishery. These alternatives include redesigning fishing gear, defining fishing seasons and minimum sizes, and seeking better commercialization channels, among others.
Communities involved in these fisheries have been part of the process sharing information about catches, collaborating in the design and planning of adopted measures, and establishing the necessary agreements to keep up both the production and the populations of this species.
