La Papalota private reserve, a Jaguars safe site and breeding area
Even though its hunting has been banned in Mexico since 1987, the Jaguar is in danger of extinction. To protect and recover this species, it is important to conserve relevant portions of its natural habitat and to ensure connectivity between populations of Jaguar living in the region.
Located in Santiago Ixcuintla, Nayarit, the La Papalota Ecological Farm fosters interaction between populations of Jaguar that inhabit two priority areas for their conservation: San Blas-San Juan and the Marismas Nacionales Biosphere Reserve. The presence of Jaguars in La Papalota was confirmed in 2009, when footprints from the species were registered on the property for the first time.
Since January 2016, Pronatura Noroeste has collaborated on the installation of trap cameras to document the presence of Jaguars and other mammals in La Papalota. The records confirmed that at least four adult Jaguars use this reserve throughout the year for food, shelter, and reproduction, documenting photographically three pregnancies. The studies are complemented by a conservation education program implemented by the La Papalota Ecological Farm and Pronatura Noroeste.
