Sustainable forestry work in the Durango mountains
Located in the Sierra Madre Occidental of Durango, the Ejido Pueblo Nuevo is a community that lives from what nature offers. Forestry is one of the community’s main sources of income, so they are extremely careful with the extraction, cultivation, protection, development, and use of their forests, activities that generate more than 400 jobs. The ejidatarios work in an organized and sustainable manner so that future generations can enjoy the goods and services provided by the forests.
Since 2012, we have collaborated with this community to strengthen conservation, protection, and monitoring measures at the site, which includes more than 200,000 hectares and where two large hydrological basins, the Baluarte and Acaponeta rivers, originate. The flows and aquifers from these rivers are of great ecological and economic importance for the south of Sinaloa, the north of Nayarit, and, primarily, for the wetland complex known as Marismas Nacionales. For this reason, conserving the forests of the Pueblo Nuevo ejido is strategic to achieving the sustainability of the hydrological services that maintain the National Marismas Biosphere Reserve, Nayarit.
In addition to their influence on water harvesting, the importance of these forests is related to the variety of environmental services they provide: carbon capture, oxygen production, habitat for a wide variety of bird species, hydrological services, and a source of livelihood for the inhabitants of the ejido.
By promoting the sustainable management of forest resources in more than 237 947 hectares, the communities of Ejido Pueblo Nuevo contribute to the social, economic, ecological, and environmental development of the region.
