A multidisciplinary team of conservationists managed to place GPS collars on two jaguars in the “La Papalota” Area Voluntarily Designated for Conservation in Santiago Ixcuintla to learn more about their way of life and find the best strategies to conserve the feline in this area of Nayarit.

To maintain a healthy marine ecosystem and proper fisheries management, Pronatura Noroeste works with the Barred Sand Bass fishery in Punta Abreojos, Baja California Sur, under the Fishery Improvement Project model.

At Pronatura Noroeste we promote the training and operational strengthening of advisory councils, for which we collaborate with the National Commission for Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) and partners, with the aim of developing methodologies to evaluate and improve the functioning of the councils through self-evaluation, which allows for the identification of areas for improvement.

To restore 35 hectares of the Colorado River riparian corridor, Pronatura Noroeste produced 35 000 native trees and shrubs, which will be utilized in reforestation activities this fall.

The northwest of Mexico is part of one of three migratory corridors, the Pacific corridor, in the American continent. It is considered one of the most important regions for shorebirds, receiving more than one million each winter.

To improve the quality of treated water and create a habitat for native and migratory species, the Cocopah Wetland was inaugurated at the Wastewater Treatment Plant in San Luis Rio Colorado (Sonora) in March of 2018 under the banner of the 3rd World Water Day Forum.

The Bird Conservation program conducts protection and habitat management activities in Laguna Babicora de Chihuahua. Known as the land of cranes and geese, Babicora is one of the most important sites of the central migratory route. In it can be found migratory waterfowl, such as the Sandhill Crane, the Snow Goose , and Ross’s goose, as well as a variety of ducks and shorebirds.

The introduction of exotic species has a negative impact on biodiversity; they depredate native species and modify the habitat, affecting the ecosystem. To protect the mangrove and conserve local nesting sites for birds, the Protection and Recovery of Threatened Species program developed a project to control the Possum Grape Vine in Marismas Nacionales Nayarit Biosphere Reserve.

The success of riparian fishing in the Northwest Mexico depends on a healthy ecosystem and appropriate fisheries management. Pronatura Noroeste promotes Fishery Improvement Projects as a tool to achieve sustainable fishing. Their implementation allows fisheries to identify areas of opportunity and place them in a continuous improvement cycle.  

As part of the Barred Sand Bass* FIP activities, Pronatura Noroeste and the Regional Federation of Cooperative Societies of the Baja California Fishing Industry FSL (FEDECOOP) began a pilot program of the “Online logging system” in the meeting held between April 24th and 25th in Punta Abreojos (Baja California Sur).

The Conservation Education program develops a line of work to contribute to the protection of marine ecosystems in Northwest Mexico through teacher training and design of educational materials.

Ejido Gomez Farias and Pronatura Noroeste A.C. signed a Conservation Contract for 20 years to protect 900 hectares of Laguna Babícora in Chihuahua, one of the most important sites used by waterfowl in the central migratory route.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Denver, Colorado (U.S.A.) and San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora (Mexico) this past March 23rd to establish the “Sister Cities of the River” Council. This letter of intent recognizes the importance of protecting and restoring the Colorado River for economic development, quality of life, and culture of the cities established in its basin.

Our Bird Conservation program works in three priority sites identified during the last decade. The activities conducted between 2015 and 2017 allowed us to finish exploring sites on the Sonoran Coast.
