On October 14 and 15, the first Revive the Colorado River/Rise The River Festival will be held where we will learn how science, policy and joint efforts are working to restore the Colorado River.

This is the first Natural Protected Area in the state of Baja California. It is expected to be the prelude to a chain of decrees for the state.

14 years ago Dr. Fausto Ramírez Barreto knocked on the door of my office. He had a rather large folder under his arm, documenting the effort he was carrying out to promote the creation of a park on the San Miguel stream, in Ensenada, Baja California. "Imagine arriving in Ensenada and being welcomed by a beautiful park, worthy of our city," he told me.

On September 17, 2021, the Baja California government published the executive decree that designated the “Arroyo San Miguel” State Park. The San Miguel stream and beach are located in the City of Ensenada and cover an area of ​​67 hectares of coastal and riparian landscape in the Pacific coast of Baja California. The Secretary of Sustainable Economy and Tourism of the State government, with the technical support of Pronatura Noroeste, carried out all the procedures in legal terms to protect this emblematic site, which guarantees the protection of biodiversity, as well as access to public spaces for the sport, recreation and family life in the open air.

The proposed state park will cover the need for green areas in the El Sauzal de Rodríguez Delegation, making a space for family gatherings and sports. The Municipal President is expected to make a formal request to the Governor of the State, Jaime Bonilla, to create what would be the first state-run natural protected area.

In partnership with Pronatura Noroeste of Mexico, Save The Waves Coalition (STW) has supported a local initiative to create the first State Park in Baja California. This year, the dream of protecting the iconic surf ecosystem at San Miguel is in sight.

Birdwatching is an activity that is gaining more and more followers, and Mexico offers perfect conditions for it since, due to its geographic location, it is one of the countries of transit, nesting, or hibernation for birds. According to data from the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, Mexico has 96,000 species of birds.

The Colorado River is born in the Rocky Mountains in the United States and runs 2,300 kilometers to northern Mexico. On the border with Baja California and Sonora, it runs 140 kilometers to the Gulf of California. And it is, perhaps, one of the most emblematic and important transborder rivers in the world. 

Los Cabos

Los Cabos is the region at the end of the Peninsula of Baja California. Where the natural landscape and seascape are just spectacular – the desert meets the sea in San José del Cabo, and life shines with every wave.

The North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI) awarded Pronatura Noroeste the “Gary T. Myers Award” for its contributions to the conservation of birds in Northwest Mexico. The award ceremony was held on August 19, 2020 and was attended by several members of the international conservation community.

Our region is located in the Pacific Migratory Route, which means we live in an area that provides refuge and rest to many birds in transit to their nesting or overwintering sites. But we not only live with these birds, we also live with innumerable birds that reside in the cities where we live and about which we still know little.

The first data on the Yuma Ridgway rail specimens were obtained through a telemetry system. This research project seeks to understand the patterns of dispersion of the Yuma Ridgway rail in the Mexican territory and determine if they demonstrate migratory movements or remain in the wetlands of the Colorado River Delta.

Students, teachers, civil society organizations, and government came together on February 4th to celebrate World Wetlands Day, see the Las Arenitas artificial wetland in Baja California, and discuss its benefits.
