Jesús Flores: fisherman and shore diver with 23 years of experience
Jesús Flores Cordero is one of our collaborators who, in 2017, led the formation of the Shore Divers of the Sea of Cortes S.P.R. of R.L. fishermen group, which is now developing an Octopus Fisheries Improvement Project in Bahía de los Ángeles, Baja California. Carolina Rodríguez spoke with him about his experiences as a fisherman and his learnings from developing the FIP.

Nocturnal Surveillance Program in Cabo Pulmo National Park
One year after the installation of the Marine Monitor (M2) in the Cabo Pulmo National Park, we have identified patterns of irregular behaviors in the sea and implemented activities aimed at addressing them. As part of these activities, a pilot nocturnal surveillance program was designed and executed in the park. The program launched in June of this year.

Governance Improvement Programs in the Natural Protected Areas of Northwest Mexico: Loreto, a success story
Through Governance Improvement Programs, Pronatura Noroeste, CONANP, and their partners strengthen Natural Protected Areas (NPAs) in a systematic and measurable way. To that end, in 2016 we conducted an initial evaluation to identify opportunities to improve each NPA, with a focus on five central themes: participation of the actors, existing management instruments, actor capacities and knowledge, financing, and regulation compliance.

No Fishing Zone established, and Cuban lobster houses installed in Isla Isabel
Isla Isabel is located on the Mexican Pacific, 15 miles from the coast. It is a unique place surrounded by coral reefs that serve as a nursery for one of the largest mangroves in the country. Its ecological value is recognized not only by conservation associations and government authorities, but also by the fishermen of the area who promote and are involved in actions to protect it, making them responsible both for its conservation and the development of the fishing sector.

The FIP plan of work for the chocolate clam was approved in Altata-Ensenada de Pabellones, to achieve sustainable use of and conserve the resource, and explore new commercialization opportunities.

Sustainable White Snook fishery in Nayarit
The development of activities for the Common Snook Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) improved the information system and monitoring of the catches of this and other associated species, and sparked the establishment of two fishing refuge areas, Barra and Palicienta in Boca de Camichin, and the Barritas estuary and Latas lagoon in Laureles, Nayarit.

The start of the “Online logging system” pilot program
As part of the Barred Sand Bass* FIP activities, Pronatura Noroeste and the Regional Federation of Cooperative Societies of the Baja California Fishing Industry FSL (FEDECOOP) began a pilot program of the “Online logging system” in the meeting held between April 24th and 25th in Punta Abreojos (Baja California Sur).

Working group consolidated for the implementation of octopus FIP in Bahia de los Angeles
To consolidate a work group for the implementation of the Octopus Fishery Improvement Plan (FIP) in Bahía de los Angeles, Pronatura Noroeste participated – with the community, groups of fishermen, fishing permit holders, the Secretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Baja California, the National Fisheries Institute, the National Commission for Natural Protected Areas, and the State Aquatic Health and Safety Committee of Baja California – in a meeting that took place on September 28th in that community.

Awards to individuals and organizations working for the conservation of biodiversity
Pronatura Noroeste received the Ecological Merit Award 2016 in the framework of the Conference of Parties (COP 13), on the Agreement on Biological Diversity, in the city of Cancun, Quintana Roo. The ceremony, held Sunday December 4 2016 at the International Convention Center in Cancun, was chaired by Rafael Pacciano Alamán, Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).
