The wetlands of the south of Sonora are of extreme importance to the Migratory Route of the Pacific. These wetlands provide wintering and resting sites for various species of aquatic birds during their migrations of hundreds of miles. Additionally, these wetlands provide critical habitat for 22 species under legal protection by Mexican law (threatened, endangered, or under special protection; NOM-ECOL-059), including the kentish plover, least tern, reddish egret, least grebe and clapper rail. Since 1993, Pronatura has worked in the wetlands of the south of the Sonora to conserve their value and function against great pressure for agricultural development and tourism in the area. The conservation programs in the wetlands of the south of Sonora include environmental education, community involvement, the development of municipal management programs and the monitoring of flora and fauna. Recently, Pronatura has initiated communications programs in the wetlands of the south of Sonora while expanding its collaboration with the organization, Mangle Negro. A conservation of private lands initiative in the corridor of Yavaros-Moroncarit-Agiabampo has also been purposed.
