Protection and Recovery of Endangered Species Program

Mexican flora and fauna are threatened by commercial exploitation, poaching, destruction, modification and fragmentation of habitat and the gernal alteration of ecosystems, among other actions of environmental impact. As a result of this situation, the natural populations of some species have been seriously diminished and some of them have come close to biological extinction.

The extinction of a species represents an irreversible and inexcusable loss for any country, particularly for one like Mexico, which has both the privilege and responsibility of hosting singularly high levels of biodiversity. For this reason, Mexico has a moral and ethical obligation to protect each and ever one of the countless forms of life that have evolved withing its territory.

Pronatura Noroeste collaborates in the protection of endangered terrestrial and marine species currently:

  • Gulf Grouper and Goliath Grouper (Mycteroperca jordani y Epinephelus Itajara, Gulf of California)
  • Southwestern Arroyo Toad (Bufo californicus, northwestern Baja California)
  • Marine turtles (five species, Gulf of California)
  • Tufted Jay (Cyanocorax dickeyi, El Palmito, Sin.)
  • Yuma Clapper Rail (Rallus longirostris yumanensis, Colorado River Delta)
  • California Least Tern(Sterna antillarum browni, Pacific Coast of B.C.)
  • Vaquita Marina (Phocoena sinus, Upper Gulf of California)
  • Jaguar (Panthera onca, Western Sierra Madra)
